  · inter → between … 사이에

  · rupt → to break 

    때리거나 떨어트려 두개 또는 그이상의 작은 파편으로 조각내다.

    (When an object breaks or when you break it, it suddenly separates into two or more pieces, often because it has been hit or dropped.)

  · inter·rupt → … 사이를 조각내서 파탄내다. → (파탄내서) 방해·중단시키다.

○ interrupt의 유래

   inter(=between)과 rupt(=break)이 만나 만들어진 interrupt는 어떻게 '방해·중단시키다'라는 의미를 갖게 되었을까요?

   상상해보세요.

   남자와 여자가 만나 인연을 맺습니다. 

   남자와 여자 사이에(inter = between) 연애관계가 형성됩니다. 

   하지만 제3의 인물이 우연을 가장하고 나타나 셋 사이에는(inter=between) 팽팽한 긴장감이 흐르는 삼각관계가 형성됩니다. 사소한 오해가 연속되어 서로를 불신하게 되고, 결국 그남자 그여자 사이에(inter=between) 오래된 연인관계는 산산조각나 끝나게됩니다.(rupt=break) 이것이 바로 interrupt라는 단어의 유래입니다.
