갑자기 out of the blue

그녀의 호기심이 전화기를 통해 스며나오다. 

"Do you always wear jeans?" he asks out of the blue.

"Mostly"

out of the blue 에서 blue는 푸른 하늘을 (blue sky)를 의미합니다. 

우리나라 속담에 "마른하늘에 날벼락"이란 표현이 있지요? 맑은 하늘에서 갑자기 소낙비가 내린다던가, 하늘에서 벼락이 갑자기 내리 친다던가 하는 자연현상에 비유하여 갑자기 예상치못한 어떤일이 발생하는 경우를 "out of the blue"라고 표현하며, 우리 말 표현으로는 "뜬금없이, 갑자기"로 바꿀 수 있습니다. 

 

I am not sure that I would make the journey in time.

제 시간 안에 여행을 할지 확신하지 못한다.

The roads are clear as I set off from Vancouver.

내가 벤쿠버에서 출발하는 동안, 도로는 한산하다.

It's about putting the pedal to the metal and not asking any questions at all and just going for it.
