 ● Inmates have far too much spare time to develop intricate claims of their innocence, or to cook up conspiracy theories involving unsolved crimes, or to gather secrets that might be swapped for a sudden parole.

 ● 수감자들은 매우 많은 여유시간을 가지고 있다. 그런시간을 통해 자신의 무죄에 대한 복잡한 주장을 개발하거나, 해결되지 못한 범죄를 포함한 공모이론을 만들어내기도 하며 즉결 가석방을 위해 교환될 수 있는 비밀을 수집하기도 한다. 

 ● You are the last one I would expect to sneak in my office with such a screwball idea. The very last.

 ● 그런 엉뚱한 생각을 가지고 내 사무실에 찾아오는 사람이 당신이 마지막이길 바라오. 이번이 마지막이오. 

 ● You know I'm not a fruitcake, nor a bullshitter. 

 ● 당신도 알듯이 저는 머리가 돈 멍청이도 아니고 허튼소리나 하는 그런 놈도 아니에요.

 ● My hunch is that the warden will not be able to resist a little excitement.

  ●  나의 예감은 교도관장이 다소 흥분딘 감정을 참지 못할 것이라는 것이다. 

  ● Running a no-security camp filled with well-behaved inmates is a dull job.

  ● 모범수들만이 수용된 비보안교도소를 운영한다는 것은 매우 시시한 일이다.

  ● It's as though one were strolling through a pleasant little college.

  ● 마치 쾌적한 작은 대학교정을 산책하는 것과 같다.

  ● If I set foot inside the break room I would probably be shot or hanged.

  ● 만약 내가 그 휴게실에 발을 들여놓는다면, 나는 아마도 총에 맞거나 교수형에 처해질 것이다.

  ● Marvin is sprawled in a folding chair, cup of coffee in one hand and a thick pastry in the other.

  ● 마빈은 한손에는 커피를 다른 한손에는 두툼한 페스트리를 들고 접이의자에 널부러져 앉아 있었다.

  ● If hooked by the necks and weighed together on meat scales, the three would push a thousand pounds.

  ● And with that, one of the guards kicks the door closed. It slams hard in my face, the metal crashes and vibrates, and for a split second it shakes me to the core. I have heard that sound before.

  ● 그런다음, 교도관 중의 한명이 문을 발로 차 닫았다. 문이 내 얼굴 앞에서 세게 쾅닫혔다. 금속이 충돌하며내는 소음이 진동하였다. 그리고 아주짧은 순간, 그 소리는 나를 뻐속까지 뒤흔들었다. 나는 그와 같은 소음을 이전에 들었던 적이 있었다.

  ● I happened to be the only black guy in attendance, not that this was of any significance.

  ● 나는 우연찮게 거기에 참석한 유일한 흑인이었다.별로 중요한 사실은 아니지만.

  ● I was sitting at a long table, choking down the usual rubber chicken and cold peas and shooting the bull with the mayor and a State Farm agent.

  ● 나는 긴테이블에 앉아 usual rubber chicken과 cold peas를 힘겹게 삼켰다. 그리고 시장과 스테이트팜의 직원과 시장과 함께 이런저런 이야기를 하고 있었다.

  ● Are you guys getting your rocks off on this? Must be terrible exciting to dash about like real tough guys, roughing up innocent people, sort of like the Gestapo.

  ● 당신들은 이런일에 쾌감을 느끼나요? 마치 게쉬타포 처럼 무고한 사람들을 두들겨패고, 실제 깡패처럼 이러저리 왔다갔다하는 것에 매우 흥분을 느끼는게 틀림없어요
