 1  어원과 유래

     Not the least bit = 조금도 ~ 않다

   의미는 “아주조금(the least bit)도 아니다(not)”입니다.

원래 문장은 “not in the least bit"이지만, 오래된 언어습관에 따라 전치사 "in"을 생략하여

보통 “not the least"로 사용합니다.

동일한 예는 아니지만, 우리말에 “아침밥을 먹다”에서 "밥"을 생략하여 언어습관적으로

“아침을 먹다”로 간단히 표현합니다. 

이와 같이 문법에는 정확히 맞지는 않지만, 오랜시간이 흐르면서 많은 사람들에 의해 유행어처럼 사용되어, 소위 대세로 굳은 표현들이 생각보다 많이 있습니다. "Not the least bit"은 그러한 많은 표현 중의 하나입니다. 

  ● He is not the least guilty.

  ● 그는 전혀 유죄가 아니다.

= 과장없이(보탬없이) 말하자면,

= to put it mildly, at the very least

● The dinner was tasteless, to say the least.

● 보탬없이 말하자면, 저녁은 맛이 형편없었다.

 

● I was totally upset, to say the least.

● 나 완전 놀랐어, 전혀 과장이 아니야.

 2  표현익히기

  ● The vault clerks now recognized her, trusted her, and were not the least bit suspicious when Ms. Vanessa Young showed up with a killer new bag and needed access to the vault.

  = 귀중품 베네사영이 최신 헨드백을 가지고 나타나서 귀중품 보관소에 가려하였을때, 보관소 관리원은 그녀를 알아보았고 그녀를 신뢰하였다 그리고 전혀 의심하지 않았다.

  ●  All sealed and properly air billed, efficient looking, not the least bit suspicious

  = 항공화물 운송장이 부착된 것은 그럴듯하게 보였고, 전혀 의심스럽게 보이지 않았다.

  ●  I’m not the least bit annoyed or anxious.

  =  나는 전혀 짜증이 나거나 걱정스럽지 않았다.

  ●  Ray was not the least bit friendly and said he had seen no dogs in the vicinity.

  =  레이는 전혀 친절하지 않았다. 그리고 그는 근처에서 개들을 보지 못했다.
