[공통점] look, seem and appear 

○ 설명

Look, seem, appear 는 모두 사람 또는 사물로부터 받은 인상(impression)을 나타낼 때 사용됩니다. (They are used to indicate the impression you get from something or someone.)

- She looks unhappy.

  그녀는 불행해 보인다.

- He seems angry.

  그는 화나 보인다.

- They appear (to be) contented.

  그들은 만족한 것처럼 보인다. 

 

[차이점] look, seem and appear 

look + as if / like 

seem + as if / like

appear + as if / like

“마치 ~처럼 + 보인다”라는 의미를 만들어 내기 위해 look과 seem 뒤에서 as if 또는 like를 사용합니다. 주의해야 할 점은 appear 뒤에는 as if 와 like를 사용하지 않는다는 것입니다.

- It looks as if it's going to rain again.

  다시 비가 올 것 처럼 보인다.

- It looks like they're going home soon

  그들이 곧 집으로 갈 것처럼 보인다.

- It seems as if they're no longer in love.

  그들은 더이상 사랑하지 않는 것 처럼 보인다.

- It seems like she'll never agree to a divorce.

  그녀는 이혼에 결코 동의하지 않을 것 처럼 보인다.

 

seem + to 부정사

appear + to 부정사

look + to 부정사

 

seem과 appear 뒤에 to 부정사를 사용하지만, look 뒤에는 to부정사를 사용치 않습니다

- They appear to have run away from home. They cannot be traced.

  그들은 집으로부터 도망친것으로 보인다. 그들을 추적할 수 없다.

- I seem to have lost my way. Can you help me?

  제가 가던 길을 잃은 것 같아요. 저 좀 도와줄수 있나요?

- It seems to be some kind of jellyfish. Do not go near it.

  이건 해파리의 한 종류인 것 같아요. 가까이 가지 마세요.

- They appear not to be at home. Nobody's answering.

   그들은 집에 없는 것 같아요. 아무도 대답이 없어요.

- They do not appear to be at home. No one's answering.

   그들은 집에 없는 것 같아요. 아무도 대답이 없어요.

-It looks as if / like you won't go to prison after all.

Look 관련 구동사

  ※ look after : 돌보다.
