get to와 don't get to의 의미

① get to = to arrive

 

get to의 가장 직관적인 의미는 'to arrive' 입니다. 

 

We have to get to the airport by 6:30.
I didn't get to the party until late. (i didn't make it until late)

 

② get to = to be able

 

다음으로 자주 사용되는 의미는 'to be able' 입니다. 

 

I'd like to get to know her. = I'd like to meet her and learn about her
How do you get to play tennis so well? = How are you able to play tennis so well?
They don't get to go on our weekend trip. = They are not able to go on our weekend trip.
Some kinds don't get to play in the finals. = Some kinds are not able to play in the finals.

 

상대방에게 금지의 의미로 어떤 행동을 하지 말라고 말할때, You must not do it 또는 You can't do it은 메시지는 명확하지만 너무 직설적입니다. 이보다 부드럽게 상대방에게 말하고 싶다면,  You don't get to do it. 라고 해보세요.

 

you don't get to hang out at the table.  
그 테이블에서 놀지 마세요.(놀지 마라라는 직설적 표현보다 부드럽게 하지 말라는 뉘앙스로 사용)

 

③ get to = to enjoy

 

구어체에서 'to enjoy'라는 의미로 즐겨 사용됩니다.

I get to go to the beach next weekend.  
다음주에 해변에 가서 즐길거야.

 

④ get to (me) = to annoy (me)

'~때문에 짜증나'라고 말하고 싶을때 '(something/someone) gets to me'라고 표현할 수 있습니다. 

His tone of voice really gets to me sometimes. 
그의 말투는 가끔 저를 정말 짜증나게 해요. 

The problem is starting to get to me. 
그 문제가 나를 짜증나게만들기 시작했다.
